LEED Contractor and Green Construction by Triad
In part due to the global need for sustainable development, Triad, located in Montreal, encourages green construction, as a member of the Canada Green Building Council and a LEED contractor. The Canada Green Building Council [CGBC] mission is to “ lead the transformation of the built environment to create buildings and communities that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live, work and play.”
Green construction according to the Canada Green Building Council is ‘building design and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and occupants’ in five main areas:
- Sustainable site planning
- Safeguarding water and water efficiency
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy
- Conservation of materials and resources
- Indoor environmental quality
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [LEED] Green Building Rating System™ encourages and promotes the universal implementation of sustainable green construction and community development practices through the design and implementation of measurements and performance criteria. LEED is an independent certification program and rating system for different types of construction projects’ including:
- New Construction
- Commercial Interiors
- Core and Shell
- Existing Buildings
- Homes and Neighbourhoods
The LEED program originated in the United States and is now an internationally accepted standard for the design, green construction, operation and maintenance of high efficiency green buildings. In Canada, the certification and designation of buildings is the sole duty of the CGBC and is based on the total points scored, following an independent appraisal and an assessment. There are four levels of certification for green buildings that a LEED contractor can achieve: certified, silver, gold and platinum.
